Right click with your mouse on a clear area of your Desktop, then select Properties from the resulting pop-up menu followed by the Screen Saver tab:

When you click on the Power button on the above dialogue box:
A second Dialogue Box appears:

The above dialogue box is self explanatory. The settings control what happens after a period of inactivity. You may change any of the settings to suit your working habits.
Click on the Advanced tab and you get this:
Advanced Power Options
Again, these options are self explanatory.

If you're using a laptop you'll have more options and you'll want to check that top Option to show the icon for your battery status. You'll probably also have an Alarms tab.
Hibernation is a very useful option which we'll deal with elsewhere in more detail. Windows default setup has Hibernation de-activated. Why? Ask Bill.
Hibernation Option
Nothing complicated here, just check the box so that you have access to this very useful feature which is new to XP.

UPS
The last tab in Power options tells you what your Uninterruptible Power Supply is up to. If you don't have one, you won't see this tab.

Now click OK and we'll go back to the Display Properties Dialogue Box. Click on the Appearance tab.
